Vir Island
From Croatia
The island Vir lies northwest from Zadar. Vir is part of the Zadar archipelago, located in the north-west part of Dalmatia. The Coast of this magnificent island is quite indented, with a large number of small bays, cape and rocks. Main occupations of hosts are farming, fishing and tourism. It is connected with the mainland by bridge over the Privlaka shallows.
The island of Vir has been populated since the prehistoric period -it is idyllically place which provides fresh and unspoiled nature, rest ans enjoyment for everyone.
In vicinity are located the Paklenica National Park, Kornati National Park and Krka National Park and Nin and Zadar, both places with a splendid past...

History of Vir Island
Vir Island was first mentioned in 1069 in the historical documents of the Charter of King Petar Kresimir IV, known as the Mare nostrum Dalmatikum. In the last Charter Vir was mentioned as the Ueru or Veru.
Island is full of old historic monuments like parish church of St. Juraj from 12. and 13. century, then aged parish church and cemetery of Sv. John from 13. and 14. Century. in 12. and 13. Ct. Vir was under the rule of Hungarian-Croatian rulers. According to the first available written records, the first owner of the island was Gregory Mrganić.
The arrival of the Turks in the area happend in 1500. It is believed that Venice joined the construction works on Kozjak, whose remains are still preserved and which is known as Kastelin.
In 18. Ct. opportunities are changed and citizen started to dealing with transoceanic ships AND SEA, specially between the two World wars. After World War II Vir experienced an expansion of the population.
