Split, the second city of Croatia is the center on Dalmatian coast, along with the picturesque Dubrovnik and it has a lot to offer for tourists of all sorts. Once was an important city under Diocletian, and then was under different rules and today become a somewhat urban mixture, with all different times reflecting in its architecture. The city of Split is situated in the warmest area of the northern Mediterranean coast, right in the middle of the Adriatic coast, near the rivers Jadro and Zrnovnica which already 1700 years charge this area with water.

The mild climate with 2700 hours of sunshine annually, Split transforms in the middle of winter in the oasis in which you can enjoy the sun. The industrial and economic center of the region its "green soul" keeps in the famous hill Marjan that is situated on the west side of the peninsula, where forest park near the city provides the comfort and peace from city noise on the promenade under the pine trees along the coast.

Its residents have right to say that Split is "the most beautiful town in the world and the surrounding area" and you can not controvert that, because you can feel the spirit of the past in Split. This city with about 200 thousand inhabitants has a warm Mediterranean temper, and lives its urban rhythm, with its heart in Palace of Diocletian.

How to get to Split

Split is the largest city in Dalmatia and one of the main traffic junctions at the same time. The International Airport is located near Kastel Stafilic between the two cities Trogir and Split. Split has a large ferry port. From the ferry terminal you come to the major regional and Dalmatian islands. With the car you can go on the new highway/ A 1 (Zagreb-Split), or the coastal road Jadranska Magistrala. Those who arrive trough the highway / A 1 must leave the motorway at junction Dugopolje and drive the few kilometers above the well-developed road Sinj to the coast.

Insight into history of Split

The area around Split was populated during the Neolithic. The Romans came in the year 78 BC after the construction of the Diocletian Palace. Emperor Diocletian was the first resident of Split, which gave to built in 293. year BC a luxurious imperial villa of about 30 thousand square meters in which he stayed after the departure from the Roman throne. The Byzantine Split kept its contact with the Croatian state. In the 10th and 11th Century was formed an autonomous city administration, which existed for 300 years. During the Napoleonic occupation of the city, a metropolitan city has developed. Split was beaten in 1918 by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. As a stronghold of the partisan movement during the Second World War the city was heavily bombed before the Tito's Liberation Army came. Many authorities rotated in this town, from the Croatian kings in the 10. century, through the Hungarian and Venetian administration, to the French monarchs and the Austria-Hungarian monarchy. Turbulent past has left its traces of everyday life combined in a city that has always step - forward, the center of this remaining part of the coast is still present.

What to see in Split

For sight-seeing, Split has a great deal to offer. Monuments worth seeing include the following: Palace of Diocletian was reconstructed and lies just outside eastwards from the old town, the heart of the city. You can enter the old town through the Golden Gate or the Bronze Gate and then go to the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Vestibule. There is an Ethnographic Museum. Or you might just want to stroll along the sea front, so go to the Riva, Split’s busy seafront.

The cloister from the 15th century can be seen in the monastery that was founded by Franciscan monks. In possession of the monastery is a major art collection. The altar in the apse has a rectangular wing altar "polyptych" with the patron saint of the town - St. Dominius.

The church from the 8th / 9th Century is located near the stadium and has 6 semi-apses.

Places of excursions near Split

If you are heading for the coast south of Split, you will discover a wild and beautiful nature with pebbly beaches in front of the Dalmatian mountains, which is worth seeing although some of the fishing villages are developing to bigger and modern tourist resorts. If you look out for meeting people and for joining the crowd, search for the resorts of Makarska Riviera. Also visit, what some call the jewels of Dalmatia, its islands. The waterfront promenade offers a magnificent view of the palace and the harbor.

Sports & leisure time in Split

For those who want more active vacation, there are many opportunities for sports and recreational activities in Split and the surrounding area. You can choose from cycling, horseback riding, rafting, canoe and kayaks, diving, water skiing, surfing, volleyball on the sand, and much more. As a city at sea, offer plenty of water sports, so you can rent a beach canoes, pedal boats, row and sail, ski in the sea or to try paragliding. Numerous diving and fishing societies are organizing diving and sport fishing. Of course Split also is a great starting point for a Sailing holiday in Croatia, in the marinas there are plenty of yacht charter companies offerin also sorts of vessels. If a regular Sailing boat is not enough it is also possible to charter up to 100 meter long superyachts in Split, which is of course is not something which one would experience everyday.

Where to eat

Restaurants in Split:

Look out for bakeries, like the 24-hour Prerada bakery opposite the market on Zagrebačka, which offers a large range of fresh buns, strudels and cakes. Pavement cafés invite tourists as much as locals, and most are around the Peristyle and along the waterfront.

Beaches in Split

Sandy beach with swimming plateau in the Bacvice Bay on the outskirts of the city center. Urban beach with 3 inputs, one for wheelchair users, parking nearby. In Bačvice, in the scope of Blue Flag campaign, during the last year were organized some spectacular actions, which include the cleanup of the seabed.

350-meter-long pebbly beach with some rock sections in a suburb of Split. The promenade above the beach is responsible for the traffic. From here, walk to the beach. Entry into the water over the ladder. With a regard to environmental issues there is a collaboration with the University of Split.

Nightlife and entertaining in Split

Cultural arrangements in Split

Carnival season in February is a good time for a visit when the city is crowded with people. A pop festival is happening once a year. There are plenty of cultural events happening in Split including theater, classical music, opera and ballet at the Croatian National Theater, as well as the Split Summer Festival from mid- July to mid- August.
