History of Veli Losinj

It was mentioned for the first time in 1398 as Velo Village. In the 15.Ct. here was built a tower, to defense the port and settlements from attacks of pirates. In the 17. century, a village has developed around the Veli Losinj Bay. The parish church of St. Anthony was built on the site of the first small church. In the 17. Ct. the old church was destroyed, and a new one was built, which is in 1774 renewed from the foundation, and it was built today's magnificent baroque church. The church keeps the richest gallery of Italian masters on Kvarner islands. Near the port in Veli Losinj is the church of St. Mary Our Lady of the Angels from 1510. year, which was made in a baroque style. It keeps a valuable collection of paintings by Venetian masters.
