Umag

Umag is located in a narrow small peninsula with the small bay. It is an attractive vacation but also cultural place far away from the economic activities and loud traffic connections. It is the unique place providing the vacation, fun and cultural insights. Umag or Italian Umago ranks within its 4,900 inhabitants among the typical littoral Croatian towns. The main economy branches and income sources of the home people are the vine cultivation and olive growing, tourism and agro tourism. Holiday makers estimated Umag among all other places because provides various camp sites, hotels, resorts, sport and leisure facilities and gastronomical offer. Umag is also abroad famous for the native Malvazija vine. Despite the fact that during the winter are mostly settled older inhabitants, during the summer the town enlivens and is one of the most famous tourist Istrian centers. Umag is also well known for the international tennis tournaments ATP Croatian open which are every year held in Umag and attract numerous visitors and sportsman from all over the world. Besides the tournaments held, Umag offers great number of amusement and crazy fun.

Insight into history of Umag

Umag was mentioned in the 7th century for the first time, by the anonymous citizen from Ravenna. It had already existed in Roman time which remains and evidences testify the foundations. Umag still preserves the old antique and older remains like villa Rusticae built by the Romans along the Istrian coast. That period was substituted by several problems like outbreaks of plague, cholera, and malaria which slowed his progress.

After Romans, Umag was under Byzantine governance and the Francs rule. It was the unpleasant time for Umag but because of the powerful Venetian Republic influence, that period changed. In the year 1269, the community of Umag gave its loyalty to the Venice which became the governor of Umag. This period was a peaceful one.

In the year 1370, the Genovese attacked Umag and destroyed the town™s archive. During the Venetian rule, Umag™s economy was exclusively based on the agriculture, but when the Venetian governance collapsed, the entire eastern Adriatic coast came under the rule of Francs until the year 1815, when Austria in the year 1918, Austria conquered the area. By the end of the 19th century Umag became the part of Italy and soon after the crisis in Trieste, came under the governance of Yugoslavian Army, and became the part of Croatia late in the year 1954.

Since that time and till now it is the Croatian town which has in the year 1997 received the status of town.

What to see in Umag

Visit the St. Mary church which has the beautiful wooden poliptych from the 15th century.

Old town part of Umag has numerous old historical a cultural places, buildings and preserved places which are testifying the history as once was. Besides it has the extremely interesting natural geographical position. Umag is enclosed by the sea because it lays on the peninsula which is actually the old town it self and also the center of the town. The sea promenade lies just before the old town, in the place from where the coast is connected to the tourist resort Sol Polynesia. The center of the town stretches around the Liberty Piazza (Trg Slobode).

In the old town is placed the parish church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St. Peregrine, the patron of the city Umag. The liberation cover of the Pelegrine is from the 14th century and is engraved into the walls of the Church. It is the patron of the city and is celebrated on 23rd May.

In the facade of the house in Epifanio Street 3, is settled an immured free Christian sarcophagus from the 5th century.

At the entrance of the historical core, there is the church of St. Roche, built after the plague epidemics in the year 1507. In the interior of that church, is remarkable wooden ceiling oil painted from 18th century.

In Umag you can see the remain of the defense tower, which is actually the town Museum which was one of the defense towers with the battlements in the shape of ˜a swallow™s tale, which can be seen from the sea.

In the vicinity of Umag is the hotel Sol Koralj which is placed in the 'Squirrel Park'. It is a joint ecology project of Istra tourist and Primary school Marija and Lina and is containing information of squirrels species found in the vicinity of Umag. There is a park where are placed all those small species of animals, you can watch them how they play and also you can learn something new about them as well.
