Supetar

Supetar is one of the biggest well-known tourist-centers on the Brac Island. There's an auto-free downtown. Many bars and restaurants are situated at the promenade.

Supetar is a place and a port on the northern coast of the island of Brac in the bay of St. Petar where lives around 3500 inhabitants. The main occupations are farming, viticulture, olives, fishing and of course, tourism. With the ferry line is connected to Split.

How to get to Supetar

Supetar is located on the regional road that passes through the entire island. Easily can be reached from Split with a speed boat or ferry for only 20 minutes. An airport on the island of Brac is only 25 km distant from Supetar. Yachts can be docked along the pier.

Insight into history of Supetar

Supetar has been inhabited in the Neolithic Age in the ancient times. The parish church with a monumental staircase was built in 1733. There are pictures of Baroque painter Feliksa Tironi and Baroque altarpiece. Along the road towards Donji Humac there is a church of St. Luka from the 11th Ct. Until 1440 Supetar was threatened by the pirates so it started to develop in the 2nd half of the 15th century .

The Petrinovic Mausoleum is located at the end of the beach. It was as grave site for the shipowner Petrinovic family, which emigrated to Chile and returned rich after Supetar was designed by Rosandic. Since then, even other rich islanders there elaborate tombstones.

What to see in Supetar

  • Mary's Church of the Annunciation - dates from the 18th century with a bell tower and Church museum. In addition to the church, there are mosaics from the 6th century. The church is built on the foundations of an early Christian basilica dedicated to St. Peter.
  • White Dome neo-byzantine Mausoleum of Petrinovic family - there is a cemetery next to the church of St. Nicholas where are located two early christian sarcophagus.
  • St.Luka - dates from the 11th century, and is famous for displaying the oldest preserved ship in Dalmatia, which is etched on the wall inside the church.
