The island of Rab looks barren from the mainland but holds treasures of landscape on its southern beaches. The island with its two faces! The grey, vegetation on the east and the west looks like naked area. The wind barrier of Kamenjak Mountains completes this division and are two parts of the island their striking appearance. On this beautiful island is a lot of operation, but can also be quiet places and exploring place. There are about 9,000 residents, which live mostly from tourism, agriculture, fisheries and marine.

How to get to Rab Island

The island has no fixed land link, but is only reachable with the ferry. There are two ferries to the island of Rab, which runs the ferry from the island of Krk only in the season. Regular access to the island from Jablanac exists at the foot of the Velebit Mountains.

You can go with the bus from Rijeka. There are daily bus lines runs the entire island route. You'll find all timetables in travel agency.

In the summer months, you can go with the Jadrolinija ferry-Valbiska on the island Krk directly to the Lopar and from Baška to Lopar.

On the island of Rab there are only two gas stations, both in Banjol.

Insight into history of Rab Island

The earlier traces of history about island Rab can be found in ancient Greek travelogues and sea guides. First known inhibitans were the Liburnian which is written in the geographical writings of Skylax of Chariandon. Rab was mentioned as Arba, Arbia, Arbiana or Arbitana, but the origins of the name are unknown.

This ancient island was under big influence of Venice, Austria-Hungary and the Italian and German occupation. Beginning of the 20th was period of touristic development, on Rab was the first nudist beach in the world: Edward the VIII in 1934 asked permition for swimming for his wife Wallis.

Those historical facts have left their traces, in the numerous buildings which are still preserved, monuments, way of life and architecture as well.


The museum of the Franciscan monastery of sv. Eufemija contains a Latin deed in the foundation of the monastery, from the mid-15th century; this is the oldest known document with the Croatian name of the island. The Holy Marin founder of the small European country of San Marino was born here.

What to see in Rab Island

Rab Islands has green land and hidden bays and an medieval old town which is traffic free and holds a Franciscan monastery and several churches as well as four beautiful campanile which a visitor will see from the sea when approaching the harbour. You will find also some fine Venetian palaces. Rab can be explored in different ways.

The island landscape is mainly about three parallel mountain ranges. In the eastern part of the island extends mountains of the Kamenjak with the highest collection of 403 m at the end of the northeastern area of the foothills. On the west lies the ridge Kalifront, which behind the old town of Rab was sinked into the Adriatic. In the middle of the ridges of Kamenjak and Kalifront lies The Vrsi, in the northern half of the island. Fertile levels connect the mountain chains of Kampor to Rab and Rab to Supetarska Draga and thus complete the closed island picture. There is no other island in Adriatic, where are so many sources on the island as it is on Rab.

The most attractive location on the island are especially the 1.5 km long beach Rajska / Paradise beach and the many small sandy coves. There is naturist made beach in Lopar which is why this nice place became happy seaside resort in the first half of the 19th Century.

Sports & leisure time in Rab Island

For all those who love active vacation, there are many sporting and recreational activities like: Trade, water skiing, surfing, paddle boats, rental boats, parachutes, jet skiing, tennis, sand volleyball, mini golf, football, basketball, motocross, bike rides, walks, etc.

Mountain biking is very popular on the Rab. There are many small roads, paths and tracks where you can enjoy the seaside, Mediterranean vegetation and ambience.

Rab offers ailing and water sports possibilities for almost all types of water sports. Motocross and off-road competitions started to take place on the island.

Where to eat in Rab Island

Local food can best tasted in some of the following restaurants, like for example:

Here on Rab you can taste a traditional way of preparing food and dishes. In local cuisine prevails the seafood and the Mediterranean taste. Those plants represents a great island's treasure and enrich the life and spirit od people on the island of Rab.

Beaches in Rab Island

  • Favourite far and wide beach is the beach paradise (Croatian: Rajska beach), east of the town Lopar. It is a very flat and descending some 1500 meteres long sandy beach - further sandy beaches are in close proximity to the north and ending in the Bay of Lopar on the ferry port.


  • Countless bays in Suha Punta

Others nudist beaches, easily accessible by car in the direction of Suha Punta or a taxi boat from the port! As in paradise!

Very nice beach Naturist beach with restaurant in the bay, showers and beach volleyball. To reach to Suha Punta on foot or by taxi you can hire a boat in Palit (about 15 Kuna).


Rab is in the so-called "Sahara" in a large number of these flat sloping into the sea beaches. However, you should know that these bays only partly accessible by car or you are only after a rather bumpy ride ( "forest paths") and a small walk the beaches. Therefore, the beaches are almost exclusively by boat tourists. Only the great sand beach in front of the campsite in Lopar is directly accessible by car. However, there is a large summer crowds.

Nightlife and entertaining in Rab Island

Rab provides a lot of fun and pleasure mostly in small bars, pubs, nightclubs, and cocktails bars. Among the old town's walls, squares and streets become a meeting places.
