Pula

Pula is the most important economic, business and tourist city of the peninsula Istria. Pula is with the 82.000 inhabitants the largest Istrian city and is also the cultural, economical and administrative center. The western and southern parts of the coast are more indented and are well developed for the tourism. The hinterland around Pula is smaller and by that makes the Pula’s surrounding interesting and worth to visit. In the surrounding of city Pula has settled the tourist center, small place Medulin. This small place is placed on the peninsula in the deep pine and oak woods surrounded by the amazing sea. It attracts many tourists, as well as the city Pula. Furthermore, besides the natural beauties these surroundings offer, you can enjoy the cultural and historical sights.

How to get to Pula


You can arrive by personal vehicle from the by-pass road Porec-Pula-Rabac over the road direction for Center/Amphitheater at the Street 43, Istarske Divizije. Further, as you pass the bus station, search for the parking lot. The railway connections are unfortunately rare but they exist driving to the railway stations Pula and Pazin.

Insight into history of Pula

The earliest traces of this settlement are here present for 35,000 years. Those traces testify that life around Pula and in the town was active in the Paleolithic period, which is reinforced with the Romuald cave, the foundation place. The Histris, the Illyric colony, established first settlements and life above all around 1700 B.C. The Histris where conquered in the year 177 B.C. by the Roman troops which left the mark on today’s Pula status as a Roman colony and that has stayed for centuries. The most important and most remarkable inheritance of the Roman time surely is the famous Amphitheater. After the end of the Roman governance in the year 476, Pula belonged to the Ravenna area, until the Francs dominion took the governance in the year 788. This epoch lasted until 1331; afterwards Pula belonged to Venice until the year 1797 after was exploited. Under the Austrian rule, Pula economically grew, and became the largest army and trade port base of the Mediterranean Sea.

What to see in Pula

As once was the important Roman city, Pula has preserved all the significant Roman monuments, which testify the cultural and historical importance but specially the majestic Amphitheater. Pula was the Episcopal seat in the year 425 and saves the numerous sights from the early periods of religious buildings, as well as other interesting churches, like the churches of St. Francis, St. Mary Formosa which is the beautiful 10th century Cathedral and the Church St. Nicolas. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Istria as well as the Twin gate, dating from the 2nd and 3rd Century and the Hercules Gate also. The Castle and Historical Museum of Istria are also worth a visit.

The Amphitheater, the arena of Pula The monumental Roman building is one of the most impressing Istrian monuments of the essential Roman time. For the building were used large oval solid marble blocks from the Istrian quarries. Today the theater is used for various concerts, performances and happenings. The underground hides the valuable stone monuments and leftovers of the Roman time which can be seen in the daily exhibition schedule.

  • Opening time: 9-20 o'clock it accommodates findings from the Istrian caves and the Kvarner islands. 3000 exposed pieces of the time of Histris.

Triumphal Arch and Hercules Gate The oldest gates, the Hercules Gate from 1st century B.C., built in the honor of great soldier. The Triumphal Arch was built in the 3rd century B.C. by the Governor Salvia Sergius representing the great Roman dignity through the architectural monument. Besides the Arch was built up the statue of the great writer James Joyce who many years worked and lived in Pula saying that this city was more than inspiring for him.

Market hall in Pula At the same place once was the main market place where home people were selling the vegetables, fruits, and flowers, home made honey, cheese, vine, olive oil and much more.

Church St. Mary Formosa In the time of Serge’s was in the 15th century built a small Gothic chapel. Around the Maximilian stands the Basilica of St. Mary Formosa, the most impressive and important Roman basilica. Some parts are preserved as well as the mosaics and frescoes but many value where lost and even stolen.

Forum

Next to the Serge’s has settled the Republic Square also known as Forum. In the middle of the Square has settled the August Temple from the 1st century.


In the year 1944 the Temple was almost completely destroyed during the bombing but in from the years 1945 till the 1947 was reconstructed.

Today, it is a place for smaller exhibitions of ancient stones, monuments and some bronze statues.
