Pag is a place on the island Pag. It is located in the southwestern part of Kršina (263 m), where the Pag bay transfer of a narrow (Prosika) in south-east in a shallow salt lake (Paske solila). The inner part of the bay is south of Cape St. Nicholas, where is the port of Pag.

How to get to Pag

Transport links of Pag with the mainland are excellent: from 30. May to 30. September ferries rides daily in both directions from 05.30 to 22.30 hours. On the island on the southern side can come over and Pag Bridge.

A number of daily bus lines connect Pag with almost all main towns like: Rijeka, Zagreb, Zadar, Split, and catamaran connecting it with Losinj, Rab and Rijeka.

History of Pag

In the period from 1443 to 1474 the city of Pag was built. Because of the threat from the Turks, Pag citizens came to the hinterland of Zadar and started to build a city. Since the ancient times and until the end of the 4th century Pag was the town, which is called Caska (Latin Kissa or Cissa). After an earthquake in the sea Caska went under, so that is reason why the Pag citizens went to a different location. This place is called the Old Town today. In the 10th Century, the city was completely urbanized, they had ramparts, towers, squares, churches, monasteries, popular settlements and palaces. The city residents employed in trade, fish Fang, livestock farming, they were sailors and salt producers.

Former historical records show that the name of Pag for the first time was mentioned in the 10th Century. In the year 976 King Stjepan Drzislav freed Pag by the byzantine domination and appointed a Croatian. As the majority of the Mediterranean cities Pag also lived through its ups and downs in history. In 1192, the church of St. Maria was built, which still dominate in the area of the Old Town. One of the most important events in the history of the city Pag is the preservation of the bull of the King Bele IV on 30.03.1244, through which the City of Pag got the status of a free royal city. What to see in Pag
