Novigrad

The town of Novigrad has developed in the 18th century, on an island which was connected to the land. Because of long past and many gouverments Novigrad has preserved its medieval streets, the old town walls and towers as a remainder of that time. Novigrad is located on the mouth of River Mirna and it is a quiet town, the right place for those who seek contemplation looking over the Adriatic. Explore the coastline along Novigrad and you will find numerous small bays, rocky cost and private place for spending a sun bliss day. The tourist office is once again a good place to look for accommodation and there is an Austrian- run campsite called AdriaSol.

Far-stretched wine fields surrond Novigrad (too German: New city, - Cittanova d'Istria). The Mirna flows near Novigrad into the Croatian Adria. Novigrad is smaller with its 2550 inhabitants than the neighbouring Umag, differs in addition, otherwise in various regard. How to get to Novigrad in Istria

  • by car over the Ypsillon motorway. There is a direct exit after Novigrad.
  • it gives approx. daily a bus direct connection to 5x after Poreč.
  • in the center gives it the best parking possibility at the park to Irma Bencic.
  • of course, it is reachable with any other transportation as well as a bus.

Insight into history of Novigrad in Istria

Novigrad was a Greek and later a Roman colony. In Byzantine period (6th century) it was called Neopolis and in the Middle Ages it was an Episcopal seat. As it was under Venetian rule and Turkish rule later, the town bears signs of their numerous rulers. This can be seen at façades and the main square and a loggia. Further, the town’s history is marked by its status as a location for arousing power conflicts: Turks once were confronting Austro-Hungarians, later Serbs took a strategic interest in the town during the latest Balkan wars.

Like some other istrian cities Novigrad also was quasi again created by the Romans (than Civitas new facts), after old settlements -- above all the Greeks -- had sunk. Starting from that 6. ct. here settled the Emoner and gave to the place the name Emonia. Neopolis (old Greek: new city) was of 520 - 1831 bishop seat and played particularly as port a role, since the desired Motovuner wood had to be exported.

What to see in Novigrad in Istria

Visit the 11th century crypt remaining of the Christian basilica of St Pelagius, which was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Old part of town Novigrad pleases rather by the appearance of the old part of town as by the mass of routistic offers. The local centre is formed for the Veliki Trg by the Velica Ulica and their end. In the Velica Ulica smaller business is placed and at the Veliki Trg you can from Cafés, medieval buildings and the Basilika Pelagia examine the old town. Basilika Pelagia In 6. or 7. Ct. was built. In 18. Ct. partly baroque Basilika accommodates the baroque main altar, under which is hidden a Roman crypt. Sarkophag from that crypt is appropriate for 12. Ct. and some Roman stone monuments as well- in Istria an absolute rarity. The side altars are made of marble from the year 1790.

Church of the St. Agatha This small Church is direction city exit on the cemetery. It probably originates from that 10. or 11. Ct. of this church is three a apsidialer Roman sakraler building.

Church Gospe od Karmela This church OF the Blesed Virgin of Karmel is a small orthodox church, which belongs to the city Novigrad. It is likewise toward city exit. By this church is placed cemetery.


Bank promenades & parks Behind the Basilika lies the park Novigradske Biskupije, which offers itself as starting point for a walking promenade. Here you can sit at small cafe,s directly at the water.

  • The Konoba Bonazza at the bank promenade is the right place for a good and favorable lunch.
  • A further recommendation is the Gostiona Torci. You will find these, if you go from the Veliki Trg to the city loggia and then left into the Torci turns (house number 18). The Gostiona Torci offers favorable meat and fish.
  • The Pizzeria Noe is a typical Pizzeria Novigrads.
  • The Gostiona Kod Marice at the main entrance road Novigrads, right side, with speaking parrot. Cleanly, maintained, friendly , inexpensive menus.
  • Vela Ventis: Meat and fish with plentifully supplements.
  • Taverna Ristorante Damir e Ornela: The good fish restaurant, however not completely cheaply.

Ring around the old part of town can be bathed. The internal bay is thereby more calmly than those the open sea turned side. The water quality is very good.

In Novigrad there are a several cafes and bars, where you can have beautiful evenings. Disco bars are the places where you can find good entertainment all night long. Those places of entertainment are suitable for younger and for all those who feel like it. Some interesting places are hotels and dance terraces as well, with live music and dance and different cultural events in the open. For larger parties is recommended Poreč (approx. 20 minutes with the car) where you will find more pleasure and fun throug all night.

Cultural events in Novigrad in Istria

Novigrad is homeplace for the international summer festival Music Nights under the experienced direction of the internationally known vibraphonist Bosko Petrovic. Novigrad offers numerous events, like festivals and amusing parties which are atrractive for every age. All the historical and cultural monuments are open for visits and most of cultural events are played on the open air stage-the Veliki trg (Main Square).

Cultural events in Novigrad are:

  • On 28 August in the city is celebrations in honours of the city-holy Pelagius.
  • For jazz friends Heineken summer Jazzfestival, in July and August.

The city has two galleries which provide various exhibitions (The Rigo Gallery and a Gallery in the Big Council Chamber).
