The town of Novigrad has developed in the 18th century, on an island which was connected to the land. Because of long past and many gouverments Novigrad has preserved its medieval streets, the old town walls and towers as a remainder of that time. Novigrad is located on the mouth of River Mirna and it is a quiet town, the right place for those who seek contemplation looking over the Adriatic. Explore the coastline along Novigrad and you will find numerous small bays, rocky cost and private place for spending a sun bliss day. The tourist office is once again a good place to look for accommodation and there is an Austrian- run campsite called AdriaSol.

Far-stretched wine fields surrond Novigrad (too German: New city, - Cittanova d'Istria). The Mirna flows near Novigrad into the Croatian Adria. Insight into history of Novigrad in Istria

Novigrad was a Greek and later a Roman colony. In Byzantine period (6th century) it was called Neopolis and in the Middle Ages it was an Episcopal seat. As it was under Venetian rule and Turkish rule later, the town bears signs of their numerous rulers. This can be seen at façades and the main square and a loggia. Further, the town’s history is marked by its status as a location for arousing power conflicts: Turks once were confronting Austro-Hungarians, later Serbs took a strategic interest in the town during the latest Balkan wars.

Like some other istrian cities Novigrad also was quasi again created by the Romans (than Civitas new facts), after old settlements -- above all the Greeks -- had sunk. Starting from that 6. ct. here settled the Emoner and gave to the place the name Emonia. Neopolis (old Greek: new city) was of 520 - 1831 bishop seat and played particularly as port a role, since the desired Motovuner wood had to be exported.

What to see in Novigrad in Istria

Visit the 11th century crypt remaining of the Christian basilica of St Pelagius, which was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Church of the St. Agatha This small Church is direction city exit on the cemetery. It probably originates from that 10. or 11. Ct. of this church is three a apsidialer Roman sakraler building.

Church Gospe od Karmela This church OF the Blesed Virgin of Karmel is a small orthodox church, which belongs to the city Novigrad. It is likewise toward city exit. By this church is placed cemetery.

Novigrad offers numerous events, like festivals and amusing parties which are atrractive for every age. All the historical and cultural monuments are open for visits and most of cultural events are played on the open air stage-the Veliki trg (Main Square).
