Labin is a medieval town situated on the hill above the town Rabac. It is consisted of three parts: the old town Labin, the suburb Podlabin, and the holiday resort Rabac at the sea level. Labin is an ideal starting point for trips to the Istrian surroundings and for Rabac. Here you will find various facilities, historical and cultural monuments worth visiting and more. Down on the sea you can enjoy in all kind of leisure facilities. Its old name Albona firstly was mentioned in the year 285 B.C. and it is a birthplace of Matthias Flacius Illyricus, the reformer and collaborator of Martin Luther. The rich cultural and architectural heritage of Labin is enliven in every step of this magnificent town.

Coming from Podlabin, you drive in the direction for Labin/Rabac and you arrive at the road junction. Driving further you will arrive to the Rabac. Driving up hill you arrive in the old town Labin.

Insight into history of Labin

The name Albona or Alvona is the Illyric-Celtic origin and the town is formed the 4th century B.C. Today there are many foundation places from the early stone and Bronze Age. In the year 177 B.C. Labin was under the Roman rule. The oldest written document of the city is the stone inscription RES REPUBLICA ALBONESSIUM which originates e from the Roman time, from 3rd century. After the Roman governance Labin was under many types of governance like Ostgoten, Byzantines, Langobards, again Byzantines and finally Francs. From 902 B.C. until the year 1207 B.C. Labin was the part of the German governance. After was under the Venetian Republic rule. About 400 years of Venetian rule, gave the Labin economic growth but also the historical and cultural significance present and important till today. In the 19th century began the time of more quality growth of economy and trade. After many year and colonial changes, Labin finally within the whole Istria became Croatian.

What to see in Labin

The picturesque medieval town with a beautiful Venetian Gothic church of Blessed Mary’s Birth has Gothic rose window and other objects of that time. Within the Renaissance castles and Baroque palaces, pictorial buildings and historical streets Labin is the still living historical city which has preserved all its treasures.

Old town In the old town, at the top is settled the Tito’s piazza providing outstanding view. There you will find bars and restaurants. The entrance to the old town is the gate St. Florus with the old Labin’s coat of arms and the Venetian lion from the year 1589. Battiala Lazzarini palace is the baroque palace of the family Battiala Lazzarini from that 18th century which today is the public museum. On the ground floor has settled the Lapidarium with Roman remains, like gravestones, inscriptions and Amphorae. On the first floor are settled artistic pieces and are held some exhibitions. The town treasures the renaissance palace of family Scampicchio which now represents the valuable historical notability.


Church of Blessed Virgin Mary The church arises at the beginning of 15th century and was made in the Gothic style but in the 16th century fully restored. The front of the church is decorated with the bust of Senator Antonio Bollani who had an important role in the history. Inside are settled the amazing paintings of various Venetian artists, the marble altars from 17th century and the relict of St. Justus from 17th century. The most valuable painting probably is the altar piece of Mother God of Karmel made by Jacopo Negriti.

The bell tower Venetians is 35 meters high made in the year 1623 and provides the amazing panorama view on the entire Labin area.

What to eat in Labin


In Labin you can try the famous Istrian traditional called Manestra which is made of home made beans, corns and sausages and is served with the home baked bread and home wine. This traditional meal is served in every Istrian tavern, restaurant and hotel representing one of the Istrian trade marks known world-wide.

Beaches in Labin

Along the coast up to Ravni, you will find wonderful, lonely and mysterious beaches, bays, rocky places and coves. Most places are hidden and are hardly to access but for everyone who prefer the adrenalin vacation; this is the ideal holiday place.

Blue flag beaches in the region Labin - Rabac:

  • Plaza Girandella snady and rocky beach, approx. 2 km from the local centre.
  • Plaza Lanterna rocky beach, approx. 1 km from the local centre
  • Plaza Maslinica public gravel/sandy beach, which is also used by guests of the surrounding hotels.

  • Velo Kafe: In the morning you may drink your morning coffee there, while in the evening you can enjoy the lounge music and fresh cocktails.

Cultural arrangements in Labin

  • In the middle of July a large folklore celebration is organized in Labin and it is celebrated with traditional dance and music.
  • Labin Republic festival: From the end of June till the end of August takes place in the old town streets, picturesque places, and historical buildings. During the festival many artists expose their work like; painters, sculptors, live actors, singers, musicians, rebels, dancers, performers all gathered on the town’s main piazza.
