Kastela, town in central Dalmatia, in the vicinity of Split- Croatian largest city on the coast, Trogir and Solin, that is known for its ancient Salons from the Roman era. The word comes from the Latin word "castellum" and means a palace or a castle. Kastela, an administrative town, is the name of the collection of seven locations in the bay Kastelanski zaljev. The city administration Kastela extends to a length of about 20 kilometers and has more than 33,000 inhabitants. It has the highest population growth in Croatia. It is formed of seven smaller towns coupled with the shore Kastela Bay:

Kastela, 10 kilometers distant from Trogir in the north and from Split in the south. It is well connected to the main road routes with that part of Dalmatia, but also with the whole Croatia.

Above the Kastela there is a mountain of Kozjak (779 m), and lower toward the south and mountains Mosor (1339 m). Kastela Bay, the southern border of Kastela fields, represents a submerged depression among these mountains, Marjan peninsula and the island of Ciovo. Edge between the sea and the mainland follows shallows with frequent shore, rocks, and miniature islands.

How to get to Kastela

By car-In the arrival by car to reach Kastela the fastest way is the road/ A1 highway Zagreb-Split. The exit (24) Prgomet leads the way through Labin Dalmatinski and Plano to Jadranska Magistrala north of Split airport, just west of Kastela. There are about 20 km and it begins with Kastel Stafilic. In the east starting with Kastel Sucurac, and you should bypass the Kozjak Mountains on the highway Vucevica. Motorway toll from Zagreb to Prgomet is 146 kuna, about 20 euros.

Alternatively, the highway you can also use is the Adriatic coastal road "Jadranska Magistrala". Kastela is aligned well to extend 20 kilometers in length between the two cities Trogir and Split.

History of Kastela

Kastela with Kastela field occupies the space between the former Salone and eastern borders of Trogir, from sea to the peaks of Kozjak. Here we find traces back to prehistoric periods: burial lots, shelters and fortified hill. In an ancient stake citizens and veterans of the Roman legions built villas here, the fields are sown with Mediterranean cultures such as the vineyards and olive trees.

During the early Middle Ages the settlement was devastated. New era begins with coming of Slavs in the 7th century. The first memorial Croatian associated with the site Bijaci, where Croatian princes accept Christianity and issued his imperial documents which shows that they are real masters of this region.

In the later Middle Ages fertile fields in this area are at the center of interest Split and Trogir commune. After years of conflict Trogir and Split, the border is withdrawn mid-field and indicated on the seashore tower called Column under Ostrogom. After the Venice occupation in 1420 of Dalmatia, Kastela field came under its authority as a part of Split and Trogir's territory.

Because of Turkish thrust undefended residents left their villages on the slopes of Kozjak and settled down to the shore along the castle walls that were built by Split and Trogir emperors. Along twenty castles, here was formed seven villages of Kastel Sucurac,Kastel Gomilica, Kastel Kambelovac, Kastel Luksic, Old Kastel, Castle and New Kastel Stafilic.

Peace is coming again in the mid-1th. century, when the Turks gone near Klis. New circumstances bring economic development, built of new houses, the new church, brotherhoods order artistic images and idols; costumes are becoming richer, richly decorated with jewelry.

At the end of the 19th century Kastela is starting to develop. Social refers to stabilize in 1945, but the second half of the 20th century brings sudden and profound changes that significantly alter the picture castle, destroying harmony space and people who live there.

What to see in Kastela

An old olive tree is a protected natural monument. Estimated that is 1500 years old. Most probably originates from southern Italy or Greece, belongs to a type that does not exist in these areas, which makes it special interest.

Botanical garden in the castle Luksic from the year 1976, has been created due to anxiety and enthusiasm of teachers and students. As time went by the value of the garden grew with the quality and number of indigenous and exotic plant species. Many of these species are for the first time successfully grown on the Croatian Adriatic, and are just in this garden.

Pantan nature reserve, near Trogir, is all that remains of a much larger swamps. This is a big swamp, which has through the centuries increasingly decreased because of geological processes and urbanization. But nevertheless, swamp Pantan is valuable and today is a typical example of swamps on the eastern Adriatic coast, where fresh and salt water are mixing. In the lagoon waters Pantačke is situated fish reserve, and the whole swamp is a resort for many swamp birds in their migration process. An old mill on Pantan was renovated a few years ago and attracts an increasing number of tourists.

Beaches in Kastela

In Kastel Stafilic starts the actual Kaštelanska Riviera, with the possibility of strolling by the sea, along the shore, for an hours along the sandy bays, by conspicuous reefs, in the shadow of pines. The smell of sea grass and pine resins follows the walker, miles along the coast. Gentle coves are lined one after another, in green old trees. In Kastel Gomilica is kept the majority of sandy beaches, and thus are very suitable for children.

Cultural events in Kastela

The city Kastela continues the tradition of organizing cultural, sporting and entertainment events during the summer months.
