Crikvenica is a place in the region of Kvarner with 12,000 inhabitants. It is a 8 km long holiday centre placed near Rijeka. In 1888 by Archduke Joseph, the brother of the Hungarian king, founded as a spa. It is the place with its variety of housing facilities and entertainment and a popular holiday destination. The very pure and clear air and the Mediterranean climate promises health for asthmatics and relief as well. The whole town pesents the riviera of Crikvenica, with a line of small connected tourist resorts: Selce, Crikvenica, Dramalj and Jadranovo. Favourable geographic position and good connection with Europe contributed to an early development of tourism. The tradition of it is more than one hundred years old.

How to get to Crikvenica
- From the bus station drives buses about 9x bus stations to the Rijeka and Novi Vinodolski. To the south (Zadar and Split) buses drives 2-3x daily. For the trip to Istria is a change point in Rijeka.
- In the summer months a small tourist railway drives between Kacjak and Crikvenica.
- Caution to all motorists! Rarely are street signs, many do not even have a name

History of Crikvenica
Crikvenica is an old village, once called Kotor, which is located on hill nearby. The town name comes from a name of church (Croatian: crikva) of the Pauline Fathers monastery, which was build in 1412. In the 8.th century this area was inhibited by Croats which brought their customs and culture. During the Medievil age this region belonged to the authority of Frankopans familiy and the district of Vinodol. From that period is famous document of Vinodol dating from 1288. It is time when Crikvenica was main port of castle Grizan.
Austrian and Hungarian empire left their traces in many buildings, sights and facades which are still preserved and visible in every step of the Riviera. The hotel Therapia, represents first great hotel in Crikvenica, built in 1895 and it is reminder on the style and rule of Austrian and Hungarian.
In the 19th century Crikvenica became to grow in an attractive destination for many tourists. 1906 Crikvenica became a famous health resort.
Today, it is one of the most attractive parts of Kvarner bay, and of Adriatic coast in general.
What to see in Crikvenica
- Kotor - is an archeological zone where you can see traces of a prehistoric settlement and remains of medieval houses.
- Pavlina Convent - Former convent and present hotel from 15th century built by Pavlins. Near it is settled the church of Blessed Virgin Mary.
- Hotel Therapy - was built as a sort of example for other hotels. It is first hotel in this area surrounded with a beautiful park with tropical vegetation. The tradition of tourism in Crikvenica is connected with this beautiful hotel.

The Riviera OF Crikvenica is a large area where are settled many beautiful beaches. You can walk towards the south to the fishing village of Selce or Bribir village.
